1978: Governor Bryne of New Jersey declared  May 6 as “ Nurses Day”.Edward Scanlan a resident of Red Bank, N.J., championed the cause to continue honoring nurses in his state. 1981: ANA, in collaboration with several nursing organizations, united to endorse a resolution initiated by nurses in New Mexico. Through their Congressman, Manual Lujan, they advocated the establishment of May 6, 1982, as “ National Recognition Day for Nurses”.

1982: In February, the ANA Board of Directors officially recognized May 6, 1982, as “National Nurses Day.” This acknowledgement aligned with a joint resolution passed by the United States Congress, designating May 6 as “National Recognition Day for Nurses.”

1982: On March 25 of the same year, President Ronal Reagan signed a proclamation acknowledging May 6, 1982, as “National Recognition Day for Nurses.”
